Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/Today

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

See Wikipedia:Categories for deletion policies for the official rules of this page, and how to do cleanup.

Deletion of a category may mean that the articles and images in it are directly put in its parent category, or that another subdivision of the parent category is made. If they are already members of more suitable categories, it may also mean that they become a member of one category less.

How to use this page

[edit]
  1. Know if the category you are looking at needs deleting (or to be created). If it is a "red link" and has no articles or subcategories, then it is already deleted (more likely, it was never really created in the first place), and does not need to be listed here.
  2. Read and understand Wikipedia:Categorization before using this page. Nominate categories that violate policies here, or are misspelled, mis-capitalized, redundant/need to be merged, not NPOV, small without potential for growth, or are generally bad ideas. (See also Wikipedia:Naming conventions and Wikipedia:Manual of Style.)
  3. Please read the Wikipedia:Categorization of people policy if nominating or voting on a people-related category.
  4. Unless the category to be deleted is non-controversial – vandalism or a duplicate, for example – please do not depopulate the category (remove the tags from articles) before the community has made a decision.
  5. Add {{cfd}} to the category page for deletion. (If you are recommending that the category be renamed, you may also add a note giving the suggested new name.) This will add a message to it, and also put the page you are nominating into Category:Categories for deletion. It's important to do this to help alert people who are watching or browsing the category.
    1. Alternately, use the rename template like this: {{cfr|newname}}
    2. If you are concerned with a stub category, make sure to inform the WikiProject Stub sorting
  6. Add new deletion candidates under the appropriate day near the top of this page.
    1. Alternatively, if the category is a candidate for speedy renaming (see Wikipedia:Category renaming), add it to the speedy category at the bottom.
  7. Make sure you add a colon (:) in the link to the category being listed, like [[:Category:Foo]]. This makes the category link a hard link which can be seen on the page (and avoids putting this page into the category you are nominating).
  8. Sign any listing or vote you make by typing ~~~~ after your text.
  9. Link both categories to delete and categories to merge into. Failure to do this will delay consideration of your suggestion.

Special notes

NEW NOMINATIONS

[edit]

Category:11th-century Somali people

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Opposed for speedy.C2C: parent is Somalian people by century, but @Marcocapelle: makes good points that "Category:Ethnic Somali people and the country Somalia did not exist yet in the 11th and 12th century. " Mason (talk) 23:16, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Categories named after GTA games

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: These categories are all trivial intersections which mostly contain redirects. For instance, Category:Grand Theft Auto: Vice City only contains its main subject, Tommy Vercetti and 4 redirects.

These categories must be both purged and deleted in order to keep them in the GTA category tree. If you still disagree, then maybe only the Vice City category will be deleted rather instead. QuantumFoam66 (talk) 22:42, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:14th-century German LGBT people

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: If not merged, rename to Category:14th-century German LGBTQ people per Category:LGBTQ. But this is a three-member category, all of which are redirects. Better to merge to its parents as unhelpful for navigation. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 22:42, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that merging it to a non-LGBT category strands the redirects out of the Category:German LGBT people (which is still pending renaming to LGBTQ as of right now) and Category:14th-century LGBTQ people trees, where they need to be reflected. We need a solution that keeps all three titles in those trees while not simply throwing them into the container-only parents, which this particular merge fails to fulfill. I'm all ears if somebody's got a solution that actually solves that issue, but this doesn't. Bearcat (talk) 22:48, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Parrotiopsis

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Only contains Parrotiopsis and P. jacquemontania. The genus's article also lists P. involucrata, but most sources synonymize it with P. jacquemontania, leaving the genus monospecific. Either way, this should be upmerged per Wikipedia:WikiProject Plants/Categorization. jlwoodwa (talk) 18:53, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Political history of the Republic of Artsakh

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: merge, the addition of "history" has become redundant after the Republic of Artsakh itself became history recently. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:27, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Merge – now that Politics of the Republic of Artsakh has been placed into Politics by former country (a subcategory of Political history by country), the categories are essentially equivalent. Glancing through other members of Category:Politics by former country, none of the ones I checked had "Political history of…" subcategories. jlwoodwa (talk) 19:42, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Defunct games

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Is it possible for a game to be defunct without relying on the Internet in some way? I think this is an unnecessary parent category since there's nothing that wouldn't fit into the subcategory. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 13:17, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Zxcvbnm It's complicated. Did you look at the entries there? It had some entries added that belong in the Category:Inactive online games‎ and I moved them there, so I assume you clicked on these and did not notice that the category is intended for games that mix physical and online components, but cannot be classified as online games. For example, there were board games like Golem Arcana or children games like Xtractaurs that have physical presence as well as online component that became defunct; as well as many defunct CCGs (those probably need their own category and populating it) like Sword Girls. I've pruned the category to those three entries, although I expect there are more such products to be added. Anyway, the point of this category is to list defunct (inactive) games that are not only online, but physical. You cannot classify Golem Arcana, Xtractaurs or Sword Girls as 'online games', as you played them in the real world; the first two had an online component, but defunct CCGs don't (and they need a separate category, to be honest). Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:22, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If the game depends on online to function, then that would make it an "online game", right? Even if it has a physical component, that would be useless without the computerized online part. Digital CCG's are also basically video games. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 04:19, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Zxcvbnm Not when the game has significant physical components, such as miniatures. Golem Arcana can be played with paper rules, IIRC. Anyway, I've created a new subcategory for Category:Discontinued collectible card games so now this is also valid as a parent category unifying such games with online ones and the weird hybrid ones like Golem Arcna and Xtractaurs. @BOZ in case they have some other games to add here, or comments. Category:Islam and slavery

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: purge all content that is region-based or language-based rather than religion-based. For comparison, the article Slavery in the United States is not in Category:Christianity and slavery either. Possibly rename to Category:Islamic views on slavery and do the same for other religions. Marcocapelle (talk) 11:03, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Purge but not rename. I think the way it is works well. Omnis Scientia (talk) 22:46, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Omnis Scientia: "the way it is" will not continue if it is purged per the nominator's proposal. – Fayenatic London 12:02, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Fayenatic london, you make a fair point. I'm definitely open to more suggestions on the matter. Omnis Scientia (talk) 12:11, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't think that religions "been historically dominant in the society of those regions" is a good argument. This way of reasoning would imply that every social history article should be put in a religion category too, I do not think that would be a good idea. Category:Trilingual Wikipedians

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Fails WP:USERCAT for lacking any discernible collaborative function. * Pppery * it has begun... 16:04, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Actors who are Wheelchair Users

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Capitalization. Fram (talk) 11:26, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This was after talking to two actors who are wheelchair users. Like Blind or Deaf actors, chair users have their own identity, and they have particular access needs which makes accessing the profession of acting particularly problematic. They seemed to be a category missing from Actors with Disabilities... which is a title that is questionable. I know quite a lot of Disabled Actors and although they are actors first, being a Disabled Actors has two useful interpretations. From a cultural standpoint they are a community, which is why when the Disabled Artists Alliance was formed, over 300 disabled actors and theatre creatives who lobby against cripping-up in the UK, they chose the name, because from a social model of disability perspective they are also disabled by the ableist attitudes and assumptions when it comes to casting. GRF (talk) 11:47, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Films Where Non-Disabled Actors Play Disabled Roles

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: If we need this category, it should be capitalized correctly. Alternatively, it can be deleted, as it is a good list subject, but not a defining characteristic of the films so not a good category subject. Fram (talk) 11:25, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How to title this was tricky. There is a term for this which is "cripping-up", which I have created a page for to explain what it is and why there has been a very vocal movement against the practice that has also had a lot of interest in the press since about 2015. However pre-2000 it was very hard for directors to cast authentically as there were fewer professional disabled actors than I have fingers, and I have a full-set of them. I wanted the title to capture the instances rather than be a critique of what is now seen as an ableist practice. It would be unfair to say that the casting of films like My Left Foot is ableist when there were no other options. This is why on the page about Cripping-up I have added an interview with that film's director who said it is no longer acceptable.
Any suggestions welcome and the formatting I should apologise for. I'm still rather new to this. GRF (talk) 11:40, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Members of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: This category is superfluous. If you're a member, you're a knight, and vice versa. M.O.X (talk) 09:05, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Riize

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Only album articles which are already sufficiently categorized in an albums subcategory for the group. This is an unnecessary eponymous parent per WP:OCEPON. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 03:58, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Delete per nom. Omnis Scientia (talk) 09:44, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
CATMAIN does not provide any rationale for keeping eponymous categories but simply provides instructions on how to categorize articles within an eponymous category should one exist. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 05:51, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:NCT Wish albums

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Two redirects which are articles already in Category:NCT Wish songs. Information provided in the song articles do not further elaborate on the single albums to justify both albums and songs categories. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 03:55, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Wait some discussion needs to happen elsewhere as to whether the two articles should be reclassified as "single albums" rather than just "single" - I believe for consistency sake they should probably be migrated to the “single album” format which would be valid for this category.
Either way, the artist has an EP being released in about 5 hours that will inevitably have an article created in the extremely near future (within hours) that will belong in this category which could change the direction of this deletion discussion before the nomination can run its course. No point in going through a week worth of deletion discussion if by the end of it the nomination rationale that all the votes are based upon will no longer be valid. RachelTensions (talk) 04:10, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Keep - Steady (NCT Wish EP) has now been created and added to the category. There are now multiple articles using this category. RachelTensions (talk) 08:06, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Members of the South African Unemployed Peoples' Movement

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Upmerge this category that's currently unhelpful for navigation with only two pages in it. Mason (talk) 03:46, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Ukrainian goalball players

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Redudant category layer, duel upmerge Mason (talk) 01:24, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:People adherents to christian new religious movements

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Not clearly defined. Seemingly ungrammatical. I might support renaming if anyone can make sense of it. Stefen 𝕋owers among the rest! GabGruntwerk 00:32, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Virat Kohli

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Not needed, as there are only a few articles directly about Kohli, and not enough to warrant a category. Joseph2302 (talk) 07:31, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Leaning keep; seems okay to me ATM and is the average size of most epon categories (and I think it will undoubted expand in the future). Omnis Scientia (talk) 14:01, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Of the 5 things in that category, Career of Virat Kohli is a spinoff of Virat Kohli that doesn't look to have had consensus to be created, Super V is is an Indian animated television series loosely based on Virat Kohli, so is only tangentially relevant to Kohli, and {{Virat Kohli series}} is up for deletion. As such, I see 2-3 sensible articles in this category only, which is not enough. For reference, Category:Sachin Tendulkar has 11. Joseph2302 (talk) 14:26, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
